The state one-act festival was great for a few reasons.
- First, I got to see some really interesting and solidly produced shows.
- Second, I took my son Elijah with. He was willing to wake up at 4:30 am to go see theatre, which does my heart well. He loved every show with the exception of Beowulf (now who considers doing an epic in the span of 35 minutes with only two narrators and some puppets?).
- Third, the shows were extremely diverse. It was like a theatre buffet without sneeze guards.
- Forth, I took copious notes and filed them away for rainy days down the road.
- and Fifth, listening to the judge's critiques was more than interesting. They were for the most part kid-glovey, but occasionally let a critical zinger fly. My curiosity was really piqued once I figured out that one of the directors who brought a cast also served as the oral critique judge. How the MSHSL let that one fly is beyond me... Can anybody say "impartial?" But since there are technically no winners or losers (the shows aren't ranked) I guess that's the way it goes.
I thought about posting some of the judge's comments and my own specific reactions/thoughts to some of the shows, but the spring show is upon us and can't be stopped!
Ironically, the Smiths "Work is a 4-Letter Word" just popped up on my shuffle. I'd better head home.
